SealRyt Style 2017: Premium Braided Mechanical Packing Designed for Today’s Pump Challenges

January 2, 2026
Peter Chilton - Marketing Manager

With the rise of mechanical seals, packing has sometimes been overlooked. Many people have shifted their focus toward seals, and they absolutely have their place.

But at SealRyt, we know packing will always remain a critical sealing device - especially in applications where mechanical seals are unnecessary, overkill, or don’t perform as reliably.

That’s why we’re constantly researching and developing new yarns, monofilaments, and manufacturing methods. This commitment to innovation keeps us at the forefront of packing technology.

What Makes Style 2017 Different

Style 2017 is one of the latest packings we’ve manufactured, and it has delivered excellent results.

Style 2017 packing

When you look at our patented product, you’ll notice two distinct yarns, almost like a crumbled-up Oreo cookie. Each yarn serves a specific purpose in performance.

The White Yarn: A Monolithic Polymer

The white yarn is a monolithic polymer based on a single resin and engineered mechanically, chemically, and thermally for use in packing.

Its benefits include:

●     High tensile strength

●     Chemical inertness, covering pH1–14

●     Thermal capability up to 415–500°F

When installed in the stuffing box, this polymer lays flat and increases the surface area along the shaft sleeve, helping create a more effective seal.

The Black Yarn: Heat Conductivity

When developing packing, we always look for the weakest link and find ways to improve it. For this polymer, the weakness is heat conductivity.

To solve that, we pre-twist the polymer with a heat-conductive monofilament(the black yarn).

Why is heat conductivity important? Because heat is the number one killer of packing. Excess heat can burn or cook the packing, damage the shaft sleeve, create grooves, and ultimately form leak paths.

In many applications, flush water is used partly to cool the sleeve. But with 2017, the packing itself helps carry away heat.

How the Heat-Conductive Yarn Works

We don’t position the conductive yarn just in the corners or the center. Instead, we intermix it throughout the entire body of the packing. This ensures that one conductive filament will contact another, creating pathways for heat to move away from the shaft sleeve, through the packing, and into the stuffing box where it can dissipate.

Where SealRyt 2017 Performs Best

So far, we haven’t found an application where2017 isn’t effective. However, it excels in:

●     Slurries and heavy particulate media

●     Mining slurry pumps

●     Pulp and paper agitators

●     Stock pumps

●     Systems where particulates exist in the flush water

Across these applications, the performance has been excellent.
